No, you will not be completely unconscious as you would be under general anaesthesia. IV (intravenous) sedation is a form of conscious sedation where a sedative medication is delivered directly into your vein. You enter a deeply relaxed, dream-like state where anxiety completely disappears. You remain conscious and capable of responding to verbal cues from Dr Katie Grimes, but you will feel entirely unconcerned by the treatment being carried out.

Yes, IV sedation is exceptionally safe when administered by a trained, qualified clinician. At Arnold Dental, IV sedation is performed by Dr Katie Grimes, a Dental Surgeon & Oral Surgeon who holds the National Course in Conscious Sedation for Dentistry and spent over ten years working as a Specialty Doctor in hospital Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery units. Throughout your procedure, your heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels are continuously monitored by Dr Grimes and her trained clinical team.

During treatment, you will feel deeply calm, warm, and comfortable, with little awareness of noise, time, or the dental work taking place. Afterwards, you may feel slightly groggy or lightheaded as the sedative wears off. Because of the sedative’s amnesic effect, most patients have no distinct memory of the dental treatment itself, making the overall experience feel quick and painless.

IV sedation is ideal for patients who experience moderate to severe dental phobia, have a sensitive gag reflex, suffer from severe needle phobia, or have difficulty sitting still for longer appointments. It is also highly recommended for patients undergoing complex surgical procedures like dental implants or wisdom tooth removal. Before proceeding, Dr Katie Grimes will carry out a thorough medical consultation to confirm that IV sedation is a safe and suitable option for you.

During your pre-sedation consultation, Dr Katie Grimes will provide detailed, written guidelines. Generally, you should eat a light meal a few hours prior to your visit (as advised) and avoid alcohol for 24 hours before treatment. Crucially, you must arrange for a responsible adult to escort you to the practice, remain in the waiting area during your treatment, and drive or accompany you home safely afterwards.

Immediate recovery takes about 30 to 60 minutes in our comfortable practice setting before you are safe to be discharged home with your escort. However, the full effects of the sedative medication can take up to 24 hours to leave your system completely. For the remainder of the day, you should rest quietly at home and avoid driving, operating machinery, drinking alcohol, or making legal decisions. Most patients feel fully recovered and ready to resume normal activities by the following morning.
